This series was shot over two trips to the western provence of Zambia with Empowered by Light. We stayed in a beautiful preservation and environmental education camp run by ZEEC on the banks of the Zambezi, about 6 hours down an unpaved road outside Livingstone. Livingstone is home to Victoria falls, the largest falls in the world and absolutely breath-taking in it’s awesome power. Even more so at 2500 feet in an open microlight. We spent the bulk of our time visiting schools and distributing solar lanterns with our guide, friend and local minister Joe Mwitumwa – pictured here on the hood of his Defender. This allowed for incredible access to the community and an authentic picture of day-to-day life.

Since bringing my daughter Agnes into the world, I’ve become really aware [obsessed] of the food she eats and consequently the state of food and eating habits in our country. It’s a complete disaster and I believe change will happen through education and action from the bottom up.

I was born and raised in Manhattan, NYC. Attended 10 schools including Bronx Science and the United Nations school and finally home schooled myself in Mexico.

After a couple years moved to Tel-Aviv to study business and marketing. Left school to move back to NY to take a job running a youth center for low income, high-risk kids in lower manhattan.

Worked in music licensing for film and tv and as the music editor for Prophecy magazine.

Moved to LA to co-found SGR! and taught myself design and photography. Then came web design, via wordpress customization and creative hacking.

Took my new skills and started helping friends and doing personal projects, which soon lead to commercial work.

Bought a 5D II and started shooting and editing video.

Began working with Sephora while simultaneously launching a non-profit doing solar charity work in Zambia.

Connected with Greenlight Apparel where I’m currently working as the creative director.

My biggest passion is my daughter Agnes who inspires me to be the change I want to see in the world.

In the first half of 2011 a small group of us launched Empowered by Light with the mission to promote solar energy use. It was an amazing feat, that our small but dedicated team, managed to launch and a non-profit, fundraise a significant amount of money and deploy thousands of solar lanterns around Zambia in just several months. The project successfully brought clean, renewable light and energy into schools and clinics in the western province of Zambia. EBL is administering an impact assessment a planning it’s future.

This project has given new meaning to the notion ‘it takes a village.’ We received essential support from ZEEC, Rabobank, Global Green, Warner Philips, Prince Carlos, Sungevity, Cliff Bar, Josh Fox, Mark Ruffalo and Adrian Grenier.

I was the creative director, designed the identity, built the site and shot the video. www.empoweredbylight.org
